Transforming Grief Virtual Symposium: Empty Nest & the Grief Experience: Clinical Strategies for Supporting Parents in Transition

Many parents are unprepared for the emotional complexity of an empty nest. What is often viewed as a typical life transition can bring up profound feelings of grief, identity loss, and disconnection. In this session, Kelly Daugherty will explore Empty Nest Syndrome through a grief-informed lens, helping clinicians recognize the nuanced grief that arises when children leave home. Topics include:

  • Distinguishing between normal adjustment, grief, and clinical depression

  • Understanding the role of ambiguous and disenfranchised grief in the empty nest experience

  • Practical, evidence-informed interventions to support parents during this transition

  • Addressing compounded grief in parents who have experienced the death of a child

This virtual event is open to mental health professionals, educators, and anyone supporting families through transitions. Participants are encouraged to explore the full range of workshops offered at the symposium.
